President Barack Obama announced his support for Marriage Equality for same-sex couples today. Here is a statement from David Kilmnick, CEO of The Long Island GLBT Services Network
May 8, 2012, Garden City, NY – President Barack Obama announced his support for Marriage Equality for same-sex couples today. Below is a statement from David Kilmnick, the Chief Executive Officer of The Long Island GLBT Services Network on this historic announcement:
“We are thrilled that President Obama has come out for equality and is now supporting the right for same-sex couples to marry. The President's journey to this monumental policy stance is no different from many other people who have had to struggle with generations of brainwashingwhile personally knowing friends and family who are denied the same rights to marry that they have. It is an process of "evolution" as he calls it and it's not easy. In light of yesterday's voter approved amendment banning any kind of legal relationship between same-sex couples in North Carolina, President Obama's announcement today couldn't be more timely giving hope and promise to tens of thousands of GLBT young people across Long Island and the our country that they will grow up in a nation that truly embodies and practices 'liberty and justice for all'.”
The Long Island Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Services Network is an association of five non-profit organizations that serve Long Island’s GLBT community throughout the lifespan – Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), The Long Island GLBT Community Center (The Center) and Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders – Long Island (SAGE-LI), The East End Gay Organization (EEGO) and Equality Long Island (EQLI). Together, each organization is working to end homophobia and transphobia, provide a home and a safe space for the GLBT Community and advocate for equality under the law.
